The Hero of Vesuvius was recently named 2006 Best Website by the Geoscience Information Society.

Tom Gidwitz’s site “The Hero of Vesuvius” tells the story of Frank Perret, a turn-of-the-century engineer who became one of the world’s leading volcanologists. The site combines text and images in an accessible format that allows visitors to learn about the history of Vesuvius and its violent 1906 eruption that brought Perret to the attention of the world. The site’s material is more comprehensive than the articles on Tom’s primary website, tomgidwitz.com. The Hero of Vesuvius stands alone, but both sites are linked to each other to present a full portfolio of Tom’s work.

Aquapoint is a technology company focused on markets for small and decentralized wastewater management systems. The company’s marketing primarily targets corporate and consulting engineers as well as other professionals whose private and public sector clients require advanced biological treatment systems. Leveraging that marketing focus, the site makes extensive use of technical documents that can be downloaded in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). It also employs multipart forms to assist in gathering the technical information necessary to prepare systems specifications and proposals. Future site development will add resources to support the operations of existing clients.

Nestled in the coastal village of Westport, MA, Partners Village Store & Kitchen began in 1980 as the area’s first wine and beer making supply store and has evolved into a popular country store. A regular stop for many locals, Partners was interested in attracting visitors from a wider area by providing a glimpse of their diverse collection of gifts, books, specialty foods, and toys, as well as publicizing special events. Celebrating its 133rd year, the New Bedford Yacht Club also needed to upgrade its first-generation Web site. Graphically, the new site draws on the rich tradition of 19th and 20th century marine prints, many featuring local waters. Needing to decentralize the site's ongoing management, subdirectories were established for major areas of club activity: cruising, racing, and the sailing school, in addition to a comprehensive main site. This allows each site to be managed by a separate Webmaster, using a common set of page templates. Use of a high-level Web authoring tool allows the sites to be managed by club members with varying degrees of technical expertise.
